Rest is NOT a reward for enough productivity, asserts the author. It was never meant to be conditional. But you and societal expectations have turned rest into a transaction. You have reacted by deciding that stopping has to be purchased with sufficient doing, that you’re only allowed to recover if you’ve first proven you deserve to.

Commentary
Facing our egos and paradigms about rest is a good project for Mental Illness Awareness Week <Link>. Define what rest is to you, then rest once today without earning it first. Sit down, lie down, stop, at a moment when the list isn’t finished, when you haven’t done enough to justify it, and let yourself rest anyway. Prove to yourself that you’re allowed to care for your own body and mind without paying a toll.
