Insects are often at the forefront of discussions about alternative components in feed for animals. It is known the lipid fraction obtained from black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) larvae contains high concentrations of lauric acid and is highly digestible. Researchers from North Carolina State University evaluated the impact of increasing levels of supplemental black soldier fly larvae oil on growth performance and blood chemistry indices in nursery pigs.
Researchers concluded that supplemental black soldier fly larvae oil, replacing equal amounts of corn oil, increased average daily gain and improved feed efficiency, resulting in increased final pig body weight after the 40-day test period.”

The growth rate of pigs fed BSFL oil in the current study was improved by 18.1 percent during phase 1, and 5.6 percent during phase 2, resulting in improved overall ADG and increased body weight at the end of the nursery period. The improved ADG immediately after weaning is especially noteworthy considering that this is an important transition period that correlates with subsequent growth.

INSIGHTS: There are dozens of articles and YouTube videos explaining various ways to construct a BSFL production system for raising BSFL. A BSFL project is an excellent way to create a fundraising opportunity for 4-H, Scout and FFA groups. Live larvae have high demand in wild bird shops as well as make great treats for backyard poultry and fowl.
