Conclusions from a landmark new study indicate high satisfaction ratings, while more than three-fourths of adopters faced behavioral or care challenges. These findings suggest that general satisfaction measures may obscure important challenges as animals settle into their new homes. Species-specific counselling, proactive veterinary engagement, and further microchip registration guidance may better support post-adoption success.

The study also found that by one month post-adoption, only 56 percent of cat adopters and 66 percent of dog adopters had completed their first veterinary visit, but nearly half of dog adopters had NO plans for formal training.
