In some circles, academia is seen as the anti-thesis of entrepreneurship. Curriculums are often rigid and slow to change, and academics have been identified as a group of the most risk-adverse individuals. Given that students decide to be a veterinarian at an early age, they too are usually quite familiar and set with the existing definitions of veterinary medicine and it can make it even more difficult to attract individuals with entrepreneurial backgrounds. However, there are tremendous opportunities to position veterinary academic institutions to play a meaningful and unique role in developing the next generation of veterinary medicine.
