AAHA announces the 2020 AAHA Anesthesia and Monitoring Guidelines for Dogs and Cats
The new guidelines take a new approach to anesthesia called continuum of care, says guideline co-chair Tamara Grubb, DVM, PhD, DACVAA. It is a doorknob-to-doorknob strategy that begins before the patient leaves their house and ends when they return home comfortable and calm.
In addition to what’s new for the patient, for equipment and for drugs, this edition contains a curriculum for training veterinary staff on anesthesia since they are important to positive outcomes. The new guidelines are supported by additional materials within the anesthesia guidelines web location < link >

“It’s not just the process in the hospital,” Jennifer Sager, CVT, VTS, says, echoing Grubb. “It’s also the process at home, before and after. It’s not just the drugs, or the sedation. It’s the staff, it’s the owner, it’s the veterinarian.”
INSIGHTS: Supported by generous educational grants from IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Midmark, and Zoetis Petcare, the new guidelines are available in the March/April issue of the Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association <link> and on the AAHA website <link>.
