John Currin, DVM, and Jody Wade, DVM team up in this article to provide insight on best practices for vaccine administration. The practices they outline are good reminders as spring calves are born:
- Store, mix and handle vaccines according to label directions
- Choose an appropriate needle size
- Administer products according to labeled administration instructions
- Choose a BQA-certified vaccine
- Evaluate animals prior to vaccine administration
- Be aware of and adhere to product withdrawal times

INSIGHTS: We can never underestimate the importance of these simple reminders. There is consistent churn in producer employees. The least experienced may get to hold the tail but the person with the vaccine gun may also be new to the job. It’s important to understand and be able to practice the basics when a calf is jumping around between your legs.
