Behind the scenes, animal health officials are working on behalf of producers and the livestock industry, writes JoAnn Alumbaugh. She shares five topics of interest discussed during a recent meeting of the National Assembly of State Animal Health Officials in conjunction with the 2019 U.S. Animal Health Association (USAHA) annual meeting:
- Flurry of activity on antibiotic use
- Addressing gaps in regulation and oversight
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) efforts to build coordination, collaboration and communication at the animal-human-environment interface
- Critical funding required for diagnostic laboratories
- Livestock markets are private businesses

INSIGHTS: Animal health pros cannot dismiss the importance of these discussions and topics from an all-species perspective. What gets set in motion, adopted, then implemented frequently becomes foundational to managing the next set of issues, regardless of species.
