Seventy one percent of cat owners in the United Kingdom (UK) would like to change at least one of their cat’s behaviors, according to the 2019 Annual Paw Report <Link>. Based on surveys of UK residents, the report has useful insights for us all. Per the report, there is a decline in juvenile pets receiving vaccinations, and, perhaps less surprisingly, a large portion of the human population that underestimates the cost of health care for their pets. The report also addresses vaccine hesitancy, a top 10 health threat according to the World Health Organization.

Richard Hooker, BVMS (hones), MRCVS, PDSA Director of Veterinary Service concludes, “Our nation’s pets are profoundly loved, that much is clear. But how can we reconcile this with some of the more common pet welfare issues we see? For many pets, their basic needs are not being met, and education is vital in improving the picture for years to come.”
INSIGHTS: In the internet age, veterinarians must continuously work to present themselves as the best source of pet information for pet owners, not product marketers and neighbors. Use the stats in this report as talking points in your practice and social media. Your efforts to educate should lead to increased use of your services and better pet care.
